Discuss an enquiry upon results with a concrete decision brief

Understand the service before deciding

An enquiry upon results is a formal process with different services, rather than a general appeal based on how a student expected to perform. The school submits requests through its coordinator. A re-mark can change a subject result in either direction, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed route to a higher grade. Ask the coordinator which service, if any, fits the situation under current session rules.

Gather relevant official information

Record the subject, result and any marks or boundary information the school can share. State why you want the result reviewed and what next-step condition is affected. Being close to a boundary can inform a discussion, but it does not prove an error or predict a grade increase. Use actual official information rather than a remembered estimate of answers from the examination.

Try a boundary example

Imagine a result is near the next grade boundary and matters for an offer. Discuss the relevant service, possible outcomes and current deadline with the coordinator. A re-mark of externally assessed work is different from an individual re-mark of internal assessment, which is not available in the same way. Do not assume every component can be reviewed through the same service. The decision should reflect the applicable process, not merely the size of the gap.

Check consent, timing and costs

Ask for current school instructions about consent, fees, submission and communication of outcomes. Confirm the details in writing where appropriate. Do not rely on a published price or deadline from another session or school. If a university decision is involved, ask the institution how it handles a pending enquiry. Keep these conversations separate: an institutional response is not controlled by the school or the IB service.

Plan for more than one outcome

Consider what you would do if the result stays the same, rises or falls. This makes the decision concrete without assigning unsupported probabilities. Record alternatives and any deadlines they have. If you are unsure about the consequences, clarify them before authorizing the request. The aim is an informed decision about a specific service, with the risks and possible value understood.

Bring a one-page brief to the coordinator

Use fields for official result information, reason for discussion, affected condition, service questions, deadline and possible next actions. Leave unresolved details marked as questions. After the meeting, record the agreed decision and school process. This brief supports a useful conversation while keeping the coordinator's current guidance central and avoiding an expectation that disappointment alone establishes a marking error.
