Check Your Route to a Bilingual Diploma

Verify the language combination, teaching languages and practical support behind a possible bilingual diploma.

Start with the award conditions

A bilingual diploma is a defined IB award, not an informal description of speaking two languages. Under the current published rules, it can follow two group 1 languages with at least grade 3 in both, or a group 3 or 4 subject taught in a different language from the group 1 language, with at least grade 3 in each relevant subject. The usual diploma conditions also apply. Use these rules to frame a discussion with your coordinator before assuming your combination qualifies.

Write a language and course map

List your exact language courses, their subject groups, levels, and the language in which each relevant subject is taught and assessed. A language B course should not be relabelled as language A because you use that language fluently outside school. Similarly, English conversation in a science lesson is not enough evidence to establish the registered teaching and assessment language. Ask your coordinator to confirm the official arrangement. Precise information makes the award route easier to check and reveals where academic language support may be needed.

Test the academic work in each language

Compare the work expected in the proposed courses with your current experience. Reading confidently in everyday life differs from analysing literary language, interpreting a technical source, or writing a sustained argument. Try a short representative task and discuss it with the teacher. Identify vocabulary, conventions, and feedback you need, rather than labelling yourself fluent or weak overall. A bilingual route should be supported by a realistic learning plan, including how you will develop less familiar academic skills in each language.

Keep the exclusions clear

An extended essay does not contribute to the bilingual award, nor do a school-based syllabus or an additional subject beyond the six diploma subjects. Do not add an extra course or choose an EE language solely on the assumption that it creates eligibility. The published rules also address qualifying pilot and interdisciplinary subjects; ask your coordinator about your specific registration instead of generalizing from another student's case. Keep the verified award route separate from the many valuable ways you can develop languages outside it.

Worked example: checking a promising route

Imagine Mei takes Chinese A and studies history in English. She asks the coordinator to confirm the registered courses and languages, checks the relevant grade conditions, and then considers her ability to write evidence-based history in English. Her plan includes a glossary of recurring historical concepts and regular feedback on analytical paragraphs. That creates both an eligibility check and a practical support plan. Speaking Chinese at home or choosing an English-language EE would not independently establish the award route in this example.

Choose for educational value as well as eligibility

Consider why the route matters to you: sustained literary study, access to family language, academic communication, or a future course's language expectations. Verify any university recognition or language-test exemption directly with that institution; the bilingual award does not automatically answer those questions. Record your coordinator's confirmation, the support agreed with teachers, and a date to review progress. A well-chosen route gives you meaningful learning to pursue. The award should reflect that work rather than become the only reason for the combination.
