Design a science IA you can actually carry out

Move from a research question to a safe pilot, usable data and a specific evaluation of your method.

Match the question to an observable result

For biology, chemistry and physics, begin by checking the scientific investigation requirements with your teacher. A workable question identifies the relationship you will investigate and how the outcome will be measured. An illustrative physics question asks how pendulum length affects the period when the release angle is kept small. The method must make length and period unambiguous.

Write the scientific reason for expecting a relationship. Use relevant sources and distinguish an established model from your prediction for the particular setup. This helps you choose a meaningful measurement range.

List resources, controls and practical constraints

Check equipment availability, measurement resolution, collection time and any approval you need before beginning. Ask your teacher to review safety, ethical and environmental considerations relevant to the actual method. For a pendulum, consider a secure support and a clear swing area. Other investigations may need very different precautions.

Create a table of variables and how each will be handled. For length, specify the measurement points. For release angle, describe how you will keep it consistent. Replace 'room conditions controlled' with an honest explanation of what you can monitor or hold stable.

Run a pilot to expose weak measurements

Try a small part of the method before committing to the full collection. In the pendulum example, timing several complete oscillations and dividing by their number may reduce the relative influence of reaction time compared with timing one oscillation. The pilot should help you select a count that remains practical and consistent.

Record the pilot even if the method changes. Check whether your proposed range produces differences large enough to investigate with the available equipment. If the observations overlap heavily, reconsider the range, measurement approach or question with your teacher.

Plan repeats and records deliberately

Decide how repeats will help you assess variability and whether collection order could introduce drift. Repeat measurements are more useful when you understand what varies between them. Resetting the apparatus can reveal variation that repeated readings without a reset may conceal.

Prepare a raw-data table with units, instrument information and space for observations. Keep the original measurements. Record any departure from the method when it occurs, including interrupted trials or equipment changes. Choose the amount of data from the question and method, rather than an assumed universal number of trials.

Connect processing to the question

Decide what calculation or graph will reveal the relationship. For the ideal pendulum model, investigating T² against length can be useful if you explain why the transformation is appropriate. Show a representative calculation, handle uncertainty consistently and describe how the graph informs your conclusion.

  • Use units in raw and processed data.
  • Explain transformations and fitting methods.
  • Compare the result with an appropriate scientific expectation.
  • Distinguish measurement scatter from possible systematic effects.

Evaluate the limitation that matters most

Choose a limitation supported by your procedure or results. Explain its likely effect and propose a realistic improvement. 'Use better equipment' gives little direction. Explaining that a motion sensor could reduce timing variation, while stating how you would validate its measurements, makes the improvement testable. In your report, keep the scientific question, evidence and conclusion connected throughout.
