Prepare for your French B level

French B oral preparation should follow the task for your level and examination cohort. Before May 2029, SL uses a visual stimulus and HL uses a literary extract. Confirm the current sequence, timing and permitted notes with your teacher. Practise developing ideas connected to the material rather than memorizing a general speech about a theme. The subsequent discussion also requires listening and responding to what the teacher asks.

Build flexible explanation patterns

Collect language for description, comparison, opinion, justification and qualification from your class materials. Learn patterns with examples you can adapt. Phrases such as “à mon avis” or “cela dépend de” are useful when followed by a relevant, developed idea. Avoid forcing impressive expressions into sentences you cannot control. Clear communication with reasons is more useful than a sequence of sophisticated phrases disconnected from the stimulus.

Try a community-space stimulus

Imagine an SL photograph showing people sharing a public space. Begin with relevant visible details, then develop an idea about social interaction and connect it appropriately to a researched target-language context. Do not claim that the image represents every French-speaking community. At HL, practise a similar movement from a specific extract detail to ideas, characters or events, without turning the response into a generic review of the entire literary work.

Rehearse follow-up variation

Ask a partner to change a question after your first answer. If asked about a disadvantage, address it instead of repeating the benefit you prepared. Develop a point with a reason or example, then remain ready to shift. Practise clarification and paraphrase when needed. Listening to the question is part of preparation; fluent language can still produce an irrelevant response if you ignore the direction of the discussion.

Review one communication choice

Record a short practice and identify one recurring weakness: unclear time frame, unsupported opinion, stimulus drift or difficulty developing an answer. Repair that choice and try an unfamiliar prompt. Check cultural examples and pronunciation with trusted class resources or teacher feedback. Keep a small bank of adaptable language, supported by repeated use across topics. The aim is a response that remains understandable and relevant when the exact question changes.

Repeat the task with one changed condition

Change the audience, purpose or context and adapt your response. Notice which vocabulary, organization and register need to change, and which ideas remain useful. This tests communication rather than recall of a fixed answer. Compare the new attempt with trusted course materials and teacher feedback. Select one recurring error to repair, then use the corrected form in several fresh sentences. Keep successful phrases as flexible patterns, not scripts you must reproduce word for word. Revisit the task after a gap and check whether you can communicate the idea clearly without rebuilding the original response from memory. Keep a brief record of the task, your decision and the result. This makes the next practice session specific: repair the choice that caused difficulty, then attempt a new version to see whether your communication or interpretation has improved.
