Define the next research need

Begin a research block with a specific question about your investigation. You might need context, a measurement method, an opposing interpretation or evidence for a central claim. This narrows searching and helps you recognize when a source is useful. Keep a list of unresolved research needs beside your question. After each block, update the list rather than collecting material indefinitely. An essay improves through better evidence and reasoning; a large download folder does not by itself show that either is developing.

Record sources before extracting material

Create a consistent note for each source with bibliographic details, access information and page or section locations. Distinguish direct quotations, summaries and your responses visually. Record enough context to avoid making a quoted sentence imply something the source did not claim. If you analyse data, preserve the original file and document any cleaning or transformation. This makes your evidence traceable and reduces the chance that you later mistake another person's argument for an idea you developed independently.

Evaluate fitness for your question

Judge a source by how it contributes to this investigation. Consider expertise, method, purpose, evidence and the limits of its coverage. Age alone is not a universal quality test: a historical primary source and a current scientific review serve different purposes. Identify whether you are using a source as evidence of an event, an interpretation of evidence or background. A persuasive writer can still offer weak evidence. Compare claims with their support and look for independent material that could confirm, complicate or challenge them.

Work through a source comparison

Imagine an essay about a bounded transport change. A council report presents average journey times; a local newspaper describes dissatisfied passengers. Treating these as mutually exclusive accounts would be premature. The report may measure a network average while the newspaper selects particular experiences. A source note could identify the populations, time periods and measures used, then ask whether route-level data exist. The comparison generates a precise research need and prevents a sweeping claim that one source has simply disproved the other.

Turn notes into claim-evidence pairs

At the end of a research session, write one tentative claim and identify the material supporting it. Add the reasoning connecting them and a limitation or alternative explanation. If you cannot do this, your notes may still be too descriptive or your question may need refinement. Preserve uncertainty explicitly instead of smoothing it away. A short analytical memo can later become a paragraph, but its main purpose now is to test whether the research advances an answer and to reveal what remains missing.

Set a purposeful stopping rule

Before another search, decide what it must resolve. When the essential claims have suitable evidence and significant challenges have been examined, shift attention toward drafting and evaluation. Return to research for defined gaps rather than postponing writing until you feel universally informed. Discuss access problems with your supervisor early. Keep a final evidence audit: important claims should be traceable, citations should match the sources consulted, and the conclusion should remain within what the evidence and method can justify.
