Read for the central answer first

Put the question beside the draft and write the answer the essay currently gives. This may differ from the answer you intended. Identify where the body provides evidence for it and where claims depend on assumptions. Read the conclusion before polishing the introduction: it often reveals what the investigation actually established. Use the applicable guide and permitted supervisor feedback to locate consequential weaknesses. Revision is a research and reasoning task before it is a language task.

Build a reverse outline

Write one sentence stating the main claim of every paragraph or section. Add its role in the argument. Mark repeated claims, unexplained jumps and passages that describe background without helping answer the question. If a paragraph has no clear claim, decide whether it supplies necessary context or needs analytical development. Look at the sequence as a whole. A transition can improve readability, but it cannot repair an argument whose second step does not follow from the first.

Repair evidence and inference together

Check important claims against the original evidence. Ask whether your wording goes beyond what the method or source permits. A change from certainty to qualification should reflect an actual evaluation, not become a cosmetic hedge. Explain alternative interpretations and why your judgment remains reasonable. If evidence is missing, choose a focused research action or narrow the claim. When you revise a result, update every dependent paragraph, figure and conclusion so the essay does not contain contradictory versions of the same finding.

Try a worked paragraph repair

An illustrative draft says that a novel's narrator always prevents the reader from understanding other characters. A closer passage check reveals moments of direct reported speech that complicate this claim. The student revises the argument: access is restricted in particular scenes, making the reader's judgment more uncertain there, while other scenes provide partial correction. The revised paragraph compares textual evidence and explains the pattern. This is stronger reasoning because it incorporates the challenging material and states the limits of the interpretation.

Cut material according to function

When the draft is overlong, remove repeated explanations and background that the argument does not need. Do not delete every qualification first; some limitations are essential to the judgment. Condense plot summary or historical narration when a shorter account would enable the same analysis. Keep necessary methodological explanation readable. After cutting, check that citations and cross-references still work and that no paragraph begins with an unexplained concept. Word-count compliance should produce a focused essay rather than an argument with its connecting steps missing.

Perform a separate presentation pass

After the reasoning is stable, check sentence clarity, terminology, headings, figures and references. Read a central section aloud to detect overloaded sentences or unclear referents. Verify each quotation and citation using the material you consulted. Apply the word-count and presentation rules for your session. Finally inspect the exported file, including page breaks and images. Keep dated versions and a short note of consequential revisions. A successful redraft makes the investigation easier to follow while keeping the decisions and writing recognizably your own.
