Choose your science subjects and levels with a realistic plan
Use entry requirements, subject experience and the full Diploma workload to choose sciences at HL or SL.

Identify what the decision needs to accomplish
Start with possible future study, the scientific questions that interest you and your school's available courses. Decide which subjects you are choosing and which of them need consideration at HL. A science choice is more useful when you can explain the goal it serves than when it rests on a reputation for being easy or prestigious.
The DP requires a combination of HL and SL subjects, with greater breadth and depth at HL. Review the whole combination with the school rather than deciding each science level in isolation.
Check entry requirements directly
List plausible degree areas and specific institutions. Use their own current admissions pages to verify required science subjects, levels and any mathematics conditions for the intake you may apply to. Record exact requirements, recommendations and the date checked. Those categories can have different implications.
For an illustrative comparison, one programme might specify a particular HL science while another lists alternatives. Treat that as a reason to inspect actual programme pages, not as a general rule about a whole profession. Ask your school adviser to resolve unclear combinations early.
Compare the actual subject work
Read the current subject brief and ask the teacher for representative tasks. Biology, chemistry, physics, computer science and other science options involve different content and approaches. Look at how the course asks you to use concepts, data, practical methods or computational reasoning, rather than judging it from one favourite topic.
Try a short task and review the feedback. Record whether the difficulty came from a skill you can develop, unfamiliar content or a lack of interest in the work itself. These observations are more useful than confidence alone.
Check preparation and support
Discuss prior knowledge and skill gaps with the relevant teachers. Consider mathematical readiness, reading demands, practical organization and the ability to explain evidence. Ask what support and preparation are realistic before the course begins. Avoid assuming that success in a previous course transfers automatically to every DP science.
For an illustrative physics choice, inspect your ability to connect a diagram, equation and physical interpretation. For chemistry, examine how you reason with particle models and quantitative relationships. Use actual school tasks to test those skills.
Plan the whole workload
Map the science choices alongside other HL subjects, the core, activities and available study time. Ask about practical and coursework milestones. A manageable plan must include regular problem-solving or data practice and time for longer investigations. Higher level involves additional content; the choice should fit the time and support you can use.
- Confirm subject availability and level with the school.
- Distinguish required entry conditions from preferences.
- Identify specific readiness gaps and a preparation action.
- Check coursework timing across the whole Diploma combination.
Decide with the relevant cohort guidance
Write a brief rationale linking goals, verified requirements, experience and workload. Keep unresolved questions visible until the school selection process resolves them. Confirm the curriculum version for each subject: biology, chemistry and physics first-assessment-2025 guidance differs from newer ESS or Computer Science courses. Revisit the choice through permitted school review arrangements if important evidence changes, using the same comparison process rather than a general label about difficulty.
